Enhanced surface urban heat islands due to divergent urban-rural greening trends

چکیده

Abstract Satellite observations show that the surface urban heat island intensity (SUHII) has been increasing over last two decades. This is often accompanied by an increased urban-rural contrast of vegetation greenness. However, contribution uneven trends in and rural areas to trend SUHII unclear, due confounding effects climate change changes man-made infrastructures anthropogenic sources. Here we use a data-model fusion approach quantify such contributions during peak growing season. We LAI dif (the difference leaf area index) ( P < 0.05) 189 selected 228 global megacities. The from 2000 2019 accounts for about one quarter satellite-derived SUHII, impact particularly evident places with rapid urbanization cropland intensification. marginal sensitivity strongest hot-humid megacities surrounded croplands hot-dry mixed woody herbaceous vegetation. Our study highlights role long-term modulating temperature differences.

Urban heat islands in China enhanced by haze pollution

The urban heat island (UHI), the phenomenon of higher temperatures in urban land than the surrounding rural land, is commonly attributed to changes in biophysical properties of the land surface associated with urbanization. Here we provide evidence for a long-held hypothesis that the biogeochemical effect of urban aerosol or haze pollution is also a contributor to the UHI. Our results are based...

Urban climates and heat islands: albedo, evapotranspiration, and anthropogenic heat

As an introduction to this special issue on urban heat islands and cool communities, this paper reviews some of the characteristics of urban climates and the causes and effects of urban heat islands. In particular, the impacts of surface albedo, evapotranspiration, and anthropogenic heating on the near-surface climate are discussed. Numerical simulations and field measurements indicate that inc...

Comparing the diurnal and seasonal variabilities of atmospheric and surface urban heat islands based on the Beijing urban meteorological network

This study compared the diurnal and seasonal cycles of atmospheric and surface urban heat islands (UHIs) based on hourly air temperatures (Ta) collected at 65 out of 262 stations in Beijing and land surface temperature (Ts) derived from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer in the years 2013–2014. We found that the nighttime atmospheric and surface UHIs referenced to rural cropland stat...

Role of City Texture in Urban Heat Islands at Nighttime.

An urban heat island (UHI) is a climate phenomenon that results in an increased air temperature in cities when compared to their rural surroundings. In this Letter, the dependence of an UHI on urban geometry is studied. Multiyear urban-rural temperature differences and building footprints data combined with a heat radiation scaling model are used to demonstrate for more than 50 cities worldwide...

Assessment of Urban Heat Islands Using Remotely Sensed Data

Thermal infrared satellite sensor images are widely used for assessing the thermal urban environment as well as for identifying the Urban Heat Islands (UHI) in highly urbanized areas. In this study, the relationship between urban growth and UHI in the megacity of Istanbul was investigated using the Landsat 5 TM satellite sensor data and temperature recordings obtained from the meteorological st...
